The 2010 Breeding Season Diary

Forecast: There are predictions for decent rain on Sunday, spilling over to Monday, but the Western Leopard Toad breeding season is all but over and little activity is predicted.

Next Full Moon is a month away on the 23 September at 11h17: toads should be finished by then?

Summary of reports received for each date, records updated for correct date from late records. (Numbers of toads in parenthesis).

08 September: Quiet, no toads or calling reported.

07 September: Quiet, no toads or calling reported.

06 September: Calling reported at Hout Bay. Last night a major eruption occurred at Bergvliet - equivalent to that of the breeding season: 18 toads seen in 1 hour on route after heavy rain shower.

05 September: Quiet, with a few toads out at the Cycle Track and Sweet Valley. No calling reported.

04 September: Quiet, with a few toads out at the Cycle Track and Sweet Valley, and more deaths at Tokai. Calling at Seven Sleepers (Kirstenhof): "Pair in water in amplexus.  Putative godparents anxiously wringing hands."

03 September: Quiet, with a few toads out at the Cycle Track and Sweet Valley, and more deaths at Tokai. No calling reported.

02 September: Some rain last night. Very quiet, with largely feeding toads, although some toads still full of eggs are present around Swaanswyk. Calling at the Cycle Track and Dreyersdal Farm Dam, but no other areas called in.

01 September: Some rain last night. Lots of dead toads on Porter Road. Activity elsewhere quiet. Verbal reports of activity at Ottery. Calling at the Cycle Track and the City has mowed the Cycle Track again (did the same in 2009) during the middle of breeding activity.

31 August: Activity is slowing down in Bergvliet, where a few stragglers last night were on their way home. Calling from Swaanswyk was spectacular over the weekend with snoring heard from over 1km away in the early hours of Sunday morning. Calling also at Strawberry Lane. But no obvious activity on the road.

30 August: At 23h00 last night a few toads calling at Die Oog, much calling (highest to date) at Swaanswyk Wetlands, but otherwise all sites quiet last night. A few toads on the roads at Bergvliet. Calling also yesterday afternoon on the dams at Porter Estate and Constantia Uitsig.

29 August: Die Oog still continuing. The Cycle Track calming down. Calling still at Swaanswyk and Die Oog. Calling at the Cycle Track and Strawberry Lane (Constantia) last night.

28 August: The Die Oog Team decided to record not just only whether females had eggs or where empty, but also if they were coming or going, and low and behold, of the 50 odd toads from last night (sadly stats not in yet) most where leaving and most were empty: but a few females with eggs were decidedely heading away from the ponds (could these be fat bodies rather than eggs, or are the females going to go and rest away from males and return for another laying attempt? Without tracking them we wont know!) Also two pairs in amplexis were definitely of spent females going home (is this a lazy male hitching a ride or a randy male not prepared to let go?)

27 August: Some 20 toads recorded on the roads at Bergvliet last night. Calling active at Die Oog (still hundreds of males visible), with ?? toads rescued. Activity at the Cycle Track and GrootRivierKloof ponds: no calling.

26 August: Some 30 toads recorded on the roads at Bergvliet last night. Calling active at Die Oog (still hundreds of males visible), with 50 toads rescued. No other activity reported. Swaanswyk starting to sing!

25 August: Some 50 toads recorded on the roads at Bergvliet last night. Calling active at Die Oog (400-500 toads visible in the pond at night), with almost 90 toads rescued. No other activity reported.

Peak breeding activity for Die Oog.

24 August: Some 22 toads recorded on the roads at Bergvliet last night. Calling active at Die Oog (9 toads at 09h00, 16 at 15h00, 10-20 at 17h00), with about 40 toads rescued. No other activity reported

Full Moon 24 August at 19h05, corresponding with apogee (furthest distance to earth at 406 388 km).

23 August: At 23h00 last night 6 toads calling at Die Oog. No activity on roads in Bergvliet.

22 August: Some 22 toads active in Bergvliet and a few other areas: no sign of movement in Bergvliet.

21 August: No activity reported.

20 August: No activity reported.

19 August: No activity reported officially, but some activity at Noordhoek last night, filmed for 50:50.

18 August: No activity reported.

17 August: No activity reported.

16 August: No activity reported.

Forecast: Rain is predicted for next weekend, with a little on Saturday and a decent amount on Sunday. This is two days before Full Moon so will we have some activity at last?

15 August: Minor activity in Bergvliet (1 toad dead) last night.

14 August: Minor activity in Bergvliet (1 toad) last night.

13 August: No activity reported.

12 August: No activity reported.

11 August: No activity reported.

10 August: Quiet: minor activity at Lakeside and Noordhoek last night.

09 August: Quieting down. Some activity still at Kirstenhof Marina and Noordhoek last night.

Forecast: There is no rain on the 7-day forecast. A little rain was predicted for Saturday (30% chance of 0.5mm) a few days ago, but revised to nothing more recently, so there will be minimal Western Leopard Toad activity this week. Are we waiting for the Full Moon?

08 August: Quieting down. High activity still at Kirstenhof and Noordhoek, with some activity at Marina last night.

End of main breeding in Noordhoek.

07 August: Activity at 7 sites last night, with Kirstenhof, Lakeside, Marina, Muizenberg and Noordhoek humming.

06 August: Activity at 6 sites last night, with Kirstenhof, Lakeside and Noordhoek humming.

Peak breeding activity for Marina Da Gama.

05 August: Activity at 7 sites last night, with Kirstenhof and Noordhoek humming. Reports late.

Peak breeding activity for Lakeside.

Forecast: There is no rain on the forecast until Saturday, so there will be minimal Western Leopard Toad activity this week. The first rains 4mm are forecast for Saturday. Interesting the Kirstenhof has started activity as I would not have predicted it.

04 August: Activity at 6 sites last night, with Kirstenhof and Noordhoek humming. Reports late.

Peak breeding activity for Noordhoek.

Start of main breeding in Marina Da Gama.

03 August: Activity at Noordhoek and Kirstenhof last night.

Start of main breeding in Lakeside.

Peak Breeding to Date in the season so far for the Western Leopard Toad.

02 August: Major Activity at Kirstenhof last night Minor activity at Marina.

Start of main breeding in Noordhoek.

01 August: Breeding at Kirstenhof last night. Activity at Noordhoek (4 toads). Otherwise relatively quiet (1 toad in Bergvliet and Marina).

Peak breeding activity for Kirstenhof.

Start of main breeding in Noordhoek.

31 July: 1 toad and 1 dead reported in Bergvliet last night, and at Marina. Activity at Kirstenhof.

Forecast: A minor amount of rain is forecast for Monday (30% chance of 0.6mm) and thus some activity might be forecast for Western Leopard Toads that night. No breeding on the horizon. Rainfall for July is well below average. Next Full Moon in 3 weeks.

30 July: All quiet. Minor activity at Kirstenhof.

Start of main breeding in Kirstenhof.

29 July: All quiet. No activity reported last night.

28 July: All quiet. Activity at Kirstenhof and Observatory. Suddenly most groups are becomming active and reports are coming in. Many new breeding ponds! Please keep up the good work.

Forecast: A little rain and thus some activity on Wednesday, otherwise no rain and little Western Leopard Toad activity forecast for the rest of the week.

27 July: (Full Moon last night). All quiet. Minor activity at Bergvliet, Marina and Kirstenhof.

26 July: All quiet. No activity reported last night.

25 July: All quiet. Minor activity at Bergvliet (1) last night.

24 July: All quiet. No activity at Bergvliet (but 1 roadkill), but some at Noordhoek (2) and Sun Valley last night.

Forecast: With no rain forecast this week, little Western Leopard Toad activity is expected, despite the full moon. Below average rainfall for July suggests a late breeding season, unless rainfall picks up in August.

23 July: Rain. Lots of activity in Bergvliet (12), Kommetjie (1), Noordhoek (101) and Tokai (?) last night. Mark Day reported 1 toad from Die Oog.

All went quiet: no real activity anymore.

22 July: Calling from Lakeside this week between Boyes Drive and Main Road. Awaiting confirmation of this new breeding locality.

Peak activity to date for Noordhoek and Bergvliet.

No reports of activity prior to 22 July.

18 July: (First Quarter).

07 July: 2010 Group Leaders (Western Leopard Toad rescue volunteers) meeting, Meadowridge.
